Backing a horse to win only at even money can easily be beaten by betting on a 16/1 horse each way.
If the horse wins at even money with £20 on it you make £20 profit.
If you place a £10 each way bet on a 16/1 horse and it only places at 1/5 odds you make £22 profit. With the added bonus of seeing a £192 profit if the horse goes on to win.
Picking an even price winner should be easier than a 16/1 winner, but is it really that simple?
I’m sure you’ve placed bets and see the odds of the selections and thought its a “sure thing” only for it to finish well down the field.
That’s one reason why I look at bigger odds selections. I don’t need many winners to make a profit and I can even make a profit without a single winner by going each way.
That is what my Outsider Hunter method does and it was advice given to me from a very successful punter years ago in a local betting shop.
He was a guy who didn’t talk to many others but for some reason we got on really well from the first time we met.

He was convinved that the bookies were playing the punters on a daily basis and its easy to see why.
My method looks for big priced horses that are going to finish at the sharp end come the post.
Is it perfect. Not at all.
There’s one thing you need to understand when betting on the horses.
Losing is part of the process.
I don’t care who they are, every punter and tipster alike will have losing bets. The sooner you come to terms with this the more successful and profitable you will be.
It took me a while to realise this when I first started betting, everyone wants winners every day and profit just to grow and grow but that is never going to happen. Bets will lose, days will end in losses and the profit will go up and down.
To ensure that over time the profit keeps going up I found a method that allows me to limit the losses when things don’t go my way, that was both a combnination of each way betting and backing multiple horses in the same race.
Its about gaining an edge!
Any small advantage you can give yourself will result in more profit over time.
I have found 2 such advantages…
First its about race selection, not so much the distance and going but the runners in the race.
Finding runners that are dropping in distance or grade, horses carrying smaller handicaps. Finding these races it just a case of research and hard work.
The next advantage is even simpler and one that the bookies actually give to us.
Its where they’re offer extra paid places on certain races.
Just becase they offer this doesn’t mean I bet in that race, but if the race I have selected anyway, is paying 4 places in stead of 3 then I’m going to take that advantage any day of the week.
If you look at some of the results below you will see that they are even paying up to 7 places in one example!

Here are the results for this year so far, I started Monday 4th January after taking a break over Christmas and New Year.

I don’t bet Sunday’s. I also don’t bet every day if there are no races that meet my criteria then I simply don’t bet, this happend on 3 days through the first 3 weeks.
In the 15 days we did bet we made a profit of £3,414.55
I placed bets on 40 races and 28 of those races made me a profit. Thats a profit on 70% of the races I selected.
In those 40 races I made 126 selections with 73 horses returning a profit, thats a strike rate of profitable bets of 57.94%
Of course a lot of that is made up of horse placing but we did pick up 22 winners. A winning strike rate of 17.4% with odds ranging from 17/2 to 28/1
Only 12 races ended in a loss, with only 2 races not having a single return.
